POLICY ADVOCACY

At Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI), our Gender, Policy, and Advocacy Department is at the forefront of championing inclusive democracy. Through our projects, we are equipping young people and women with the skills, knowledge, and networks to actively engage in electoral reforms, shape policies, and lead governance.

Policy & Advocacy: Strengthening Youth Electoral Reforms

Our work in electoral reform advocacy has been powered by two major initiatives:

Youth Electoral Reform Priority (YERP_9Ja) Project – Supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) through NDI, this project mobilized young people across Nigeria to push for key electoral reforms aimed at creating a more transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral system. This effort led to youth-driven advocacy engagements with policymakers, legislators, and electoral stakeholders.

Youth Political Participation (YPP) Project – Building on the momentum of YERP_9Ja, this project, supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), expanded our efforts to train and empower youth across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Through capacity-building on electoral policy reforms, advocacy skills, and legislative engagement, we strengthened a youth-led movement committed to shaping Nigeria’s electoral landscape. These young advocates are now actively pushing for constitutional amendments, policy changes, and stronger democratic processes.

Gender: Advancing Women’s Political Participation

Advance: Women’s Political Participation (WPP) Project – With funding from the Government of Canada through UN Women, this project is dedicated to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for more women to take up leadership positions in politics. Through leadership training, advocacy capacity-building, and direct engagement with key stakeholders, we are:

The Impact

Together, these projects are reshaping Nigeria’s political space by ensuring that young people and women, two historically underrepresented groups, are not just participants but decision-makers in the electoral process. Through strategic advocacy, leadership development, and engagement with policymakers, we are making youth and women’s political participation a norm, not an exception.

The work continues! With every trained youth advocate and every empowered woman leader, we are one step closer to a more inclusive, equitable, and democratic Nigeria.
