The Marginalized Half: Gender Equality in Political Leadership in Nigeria

Aug 17, 2023

Low women’s representation remains a continued conversation after the 2023 general elections due to the not-so-encouraging number of females who won elected seats after the elections. Only 4.8% out of the 1556 that contested in 2023. What remains a fact is that before the election, political parties that are the only vehicle to elected offices in Nigeria set the ceiling to 10.4% - invariably, female representation cannot go beyond this ceiling.

The central question then becomes why the political party structure excludes women and why it is challenging to attain increased women’s political representation through the political party democratic process in Nigeria.

These questions and many more were answered in this factsheet.
